Six time Grammy nominated Tamia talks new album “Beautiful Surprise” and more

This has to be the most amazing interview for me so far! Tamia is my absolute favorite singer in the whole wide world. Her voice is so powerful and yet so smooth! Check out our Certified Interview!

ChristieOhh: How does being an independent artist and having your own label feel?

Tamia: It feels great! This is my second album under my label, Plus 1 Music Group. The album “Beautiful Surprise” will be released Aug 28th and I’m really excited. It is available for pre-order now on iTunes and Amazon. I worked with so many great producers and songwriters: Claude Kelly (Bruno Mars’ “Grenade” and Kelly Clarkson’s “My Life Sucks without You”), Salaam Remi (constructed tracks for The Fugees, Amy Winehouse and Nas), Shep Crawford (worked with Luther Vandross and Whitney Houston), The Runners (Keyshia Cole’s “Just Like You,” and Mary J. Blige’s “Stronger With Each Tear”) and I also am an executive producer of the album, along with Claude Kelly.

ChristieOhh: How do you balance family, a singing career and entrepreneurship?

Tamia: Like every other working mom. It’s a juggling act and it takes hard work. Sometimes I drop the ball but I pick it up and start over again. It’s all the same; we try to do it all and make our best out of it! As women, we just want to get it right.

ChristieOhh: What can we expect from your new album?

Tamia: It’s been 4 yrs since I’ve had an album out so I’ve grown! The chemistry I have with the people on the album and producers made it magical and it kind of writes itself. It was a very natural and organic feeling when putting the album together. I love to sing strong ballads, so those are on the album along with the fun stuff you can dance to. You can relax and exhale with this album.

ChristieOhh: Do your daughters sing?

Tamia: Yes! They have great voices; we sing in the house, car, everywhere. Music is a huge part of lives! We enjoy singing together.

ChristieOhh: How was it making a video with your husband for the first time?

Tamia: We had a great time! Grant is so laid back, he waited on set for his time to model. He did a great job and we laughed a lot. He has a new respect for what goes on behind the scenes of a video and it was a long day for everybody. It was great to share the experience with him.

ChristieOhh: What’s your best advice to an independent artist?

Tamia: Learn as much as you can about the music business. That’s why it’s called the “music business.” It’s a lot of hard work and sometimes you have to put up your own money. However, it can be super beneficial and rewarding to you as an artist.

Pet peeve:

I can’t stand it when you’re in the airport and there are seats available to sit in because someone has bags in the chair. And old people can be standing up and people just leave their bags there with no regards…total pet peeve of mine!

Lover of in your past time:

Quiet Time! I love to just be quiet when I have the chance.

“It’s important to stay present and in the now with your eye on the future!” Tamia
